During a service of Choral Evensong in Southwark Cathedral on Friday 1 May, a new set of Diocesan vestments commissioned to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee were blessed by the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, the Bishop of Southwark.

The Jubilee Copes for each of Southwark’s bishops are the first part of this new set of vestments and had been dedicated in the presence of Her Majesty during her visit to the Cathedral in November 2013.

The copes were designed and made by the Cathedral’s Guild of Broderers, who have looked after the maintenance of the fabrics of the Cathedral since 1987. In order to take on such a big task, the Guild appointed a number of new members with skills in design and embroidery as well as tailoring.

The Worshipful Company of Needlemakers, of which Bishop Christopher is the chaplain, generously agreed to pay for the materials.
