The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, and his Episcopal colleagues, the Area Bishops of Kingston, Woolwich and Croydon, welcome the appointment of the Revd Prebendary Rod Thomas as Bishop designate of Maidstone, in the spirit of the Five Guiding Principles of the legislation which prepared the way for women to be consecrated as Bishops in the Church of England.

Bishop Christopher and his fellow Bishops and Prebendary Rod Thomas are committed to taking forward these principles with their emphasis on enabling everyone to flourish in ministry. Prebendary Thomas, when consecrated, will be living at Blindley Heath in the Diocese of Southwark and, in consequence, Bishop Christopher has invited him to be an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese.

Bishop Christopher comments, 'I am glad to welcome the Bishop designate and his wife into the Diocese and look forward to working with him in the future as we seek to share God's Good News ever more widely in the Diocese of Southwark.'

Prebendary Rod Thomas said, 'Southwark was the Diocese which originally sponsored me for ordination training, so it is a particular pleasure to be able to return to minister here in my new capacity. I am very grateful for being given this opportunity and hope that I will be able to contribute in a way that promotes the growth of local churches and gospel outreach within the Diocese.'
